Been following this thread in the background, I've a 68 plate Civic at 45k miles and am worried about what I've read here, so I've started wondering if it's worth getting mine replaced a year early to save myself the possible hassle of an unexpected failure? I've checked my VIN, only shows one fix for an fk6/fc9 possible misfire fault, would this model still be susceptible to the same faulty timing belt assembly? I suspect so as it's the same engine being rolled off the production line?
Is it the one litre? If so it might be that you have to hit the 6 year age before it becomes recallable... The irony is that mine has only just done 30K. I was on the motorway for 10 hours at the weekend, fuming every time I saw a Civic that was a bit younger than mine, glad they weren't going to get shafted like me but still angry!

Phoned Honda dealer this morning. I am being booked in for the repair free of charge before Christmas. They have told me they could have the car up to 2 days and at a minimum timing belt will be changed but other parts? Could need changing.

Happy for you. I've managed to get Which? interested in the story - hopefully they can shame Honda into doing the right thing...

I have been told the same thing as Cooksuk, dealer going to change the timing belt and to do an inspection to assess whether additional parts will need to be replaced. Also estimating to keep the car for two days. All subject to dealer being able to get the parts prior to the appointment, which im sure will be the next fiasco. My dealer mentioned Honda are going to be contacting customers directly about the recall soon. But its far too late for those that have paid £1200, or worse have needed complete engine replacements

I've sent Honda UK an email- had a reply asking to confirm VIN etc. No substantive reply to the query as yet. I rung the dealer yesterday. They said they had been directed to do inspections on timing belts on Civics within a certain VIN range- they were keen to stress that it isn't a recall, albeit very much sounded like one to me and the above would suggest so as well.

They said if my car was within the VIN range then I may be eligible for compensation- they checked it whilst I was on the phone (it's a 2017 plate) and as luck would have it [for them] it wasn't included.

Who knows what to believe.

There is a lot of bullsh1t flying. I checked by putting my VIN into the Honda UK website and although I've been ripped off by them, their website happily confirmed that my car had been recalled for missing teeth on the timing belt and a misfire and I should contact my dealer to have it fixed for free...

Just FYI: I had my 21 plate Civic 1.0l SR in for regular periodic service (visual health check) this week, and work item "6NE PRODUCT UPDATE - 1.0L FK6 & FC9 MISFIRE AND PISTON" was automatically added to the list and completed FOC (quoted as being a software update).

6NK (the first 2 items on the above list for timing belt?) was NOT added to the list for my car, so I presume that the belt issue only affected 1.0ltr Gen 10 cars prior to circa 2021 but was corrected by the time mine was produced?

Have blanked my VIN for security but it's clear as crystal!
I might ask them specifically just to confirm, next time I'm in.

You can type your VIN in here and see what's supposed to be done...

I’ve just had the local Honda manager on the phone saying Honda are playing hardball in regards to funds refunded regardless of when it was done .
mine done on the 4th of November .
I’ve just contacted honda customer service teams and got a case number I’ve submitted to my local honda because he said he’s pushing and each dealership is pushing for refunds of some sort anyway.

Yeah, I asked the service centre that did the work to appeal on my behalf but that was over a week ago and I've heard nothing. I'm resigned to being screwed by them now. It might help if others who have been affected by this got in touch with you&yours and moneybox on radio 4 and also which. I doubt any motoring mags would dare run the story for fear of loss of ad revenue or access to new models. If we can make someone realise this is quite a widespread problem, we could at least get Honda some bad publicity. They really have behaving appalingly over this.

I’ve emailed all 3 mate and contacted the ombudsman

For people whose Civic is showing up as having a recall for the timing belt issue, are your cars 6 years old or above?

Mine is from 2019 and is currently showing no active recall issues when I checked the VIN, I spoke to Honda today to ask whether the timing belt is due to be changed at the 5 year or 6 year service as I've read conflicting information about this online and they said 5 years...I'm a bit concerned that they're going to insist I have it changed at my 5 year service and charge me for it, when it potentially will be free at the 6 year service if it's classed as a recall by that point?

Hi, mine has just hit 6 years and I was told about the requirement at my 5 year service... Gave me a year to be worried about the big bill arriving - thanks again Honda!

Yep that is the same bullshit I get almost word for word. Could have been written by the same woman I spoke to several times. It's like a politician who's been briefed to keep to the script and not answer the question. They don't address the elephant in the room that you and I have been screwed over!

After I got that email I phoned my local Honda manager and I’ve cancelled my refit appointment after they’ve said in black and white I can get it replaced for free at the next 6 years or 75k .
The manager confirmed that Honda engine has been extended to 10 years .
As all my servicing etc is still through Honda I’m covered if anything goes wrong .
so I’ll drive the car in the hope the belt I paid for snaps within the next 4 years 😂. I’ll keep the bloody thing to get my moneys worth 🧐

So are they saying that because I paid last month, I'm now covered for 6 years and they do the next one free? It's so confusing...

Yes mate . If you’ve still got that car in 6 years time /75k then your next one is free.
If your timing belt snaps and does your engine in within 10 years , Honda will sort it for free as well .
He said they used to use a loophole on engine failure if your car wasn’t maintained by Honda and get out of it that .
But he said because all my servicing/repairs are in line with manufacturer specifications they can’t use that loophole anymore .
I asked about the lads that have had to repair or write off the cars before the engine warranty extension from 5 to 10 years .
he couldn’t answer me .
