Hi,

I've got a 67 plate civic which has only done about 23000 miles. Just dropped it off for a service and MOT and was warned that next year I would have a bill for £1600 on top of the service to replace the timing belt. Looking online I see some places that say the belt should last the lifetime of the engine. Am I being had? If it really does need doing, am I better to trust a main dealer or find somewhere less than £1600?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Si

Been lurking this thread but I've just had the timing belt changed on my 2017 Civic. Was quoted £1200 but had the pleasure of the dealership telling me they had changed it free of charge!
I'm not 100% sure of the details but they mentioned getting a bulletin from Honda on November 6 about the timing belt change and they told me that if I'd had this done a couple of weeks ago, it would've cost me £1200. Not sure if getting the replacement will be free for everyone from now on but wanted to share my story.
FWIW, I've had the car 18 months and haven't used an official Honda dealership for MOTs or services.
Wow - thanks for the heads up. As I just paid the £1200 3 weeks ago for this prcoedure I'll be following this up with Honda and my dealer tomorrow. Hopefully they will do the right thing... Just out of interest, which dealer did this for you? Thanks Si

Have flagged this up with Honda Customer Service this morning - usual deflection but I've asked them to escalate it - we'll see what happens. If no dice I have a friend of a friend who works for them in Japan and might see if I can get any joy via him...

Okay - so I got a call back from Honda UK after I queried this. They were very vague about everything. Kept parroting the line that as there was nothing wrong with my car and it wasn't a repair, just a service, they could not help with the cost of the work. I asked them clearly whether I would be charged if I went to a garage today to have the same work done and I was given the run around with the answer "that is a hypothetical and we don't answer hypotheticals." That does not make me any happier. Would be great if Tommycruises could provide a few more details. If it really is true that they are no longer charging for this I feel royally ripped off!

Hi tommycruises - would be amazing if you could flesh out the story a bit about this. I'm being deflected majorly by Honda...

Okay everyone - I now have the full information. Honda are definitely now doing this repair for free. The campaign has a name - 6NK. I spoke to customer services again this morning - to the same woman who gave me the run around yesterday. Flat out refused to help me in any way with the cost of the maintenance. Pointed out I've bought 3 brand new civics in the past 13 years but she just didn't give a toss. I shall be making sure this story gets spread far and wide - no more Hondas for me obviously - I feel totally ripped off!

Good luck everyone - I basically got told to go forth and multiply by Honda. Have complained to the ombudsman and written to everyone I can think of highlighting their shady behaviour. If there are enough of us making enough noise, maybe we'll get a response but right now they just don't seem to give a sh1t...

Having checked this thread and then confirming the product recall with the VIN on Honda website. I have now been able to book my vehicle (1.0 67 plate) in to have the work carried out free of charge. After giving my car registration to my local Honda dealer on the phone, the first question that was asked was "Who told you about this product recall?" Quite clear that Honda UK and dealers trying to keep this as quiet as possible
They aren't exactly covering themselves in glory with this...

Just typed in my VIN on their website and it confirms the work should be done for free but having called Honda again, they just still parrot the same line that because the work has been done already they won't help me. I pointed out that my perfectly running car only had the work done because they insisted I did it but they refuse to budge. I feel like I've been shaken down by the mafia.

once my car is at the garage he’ll start the ‘protocol ‘ for reimbursement as they have a procedure to follow and he did say they was in the dark a bit . Again he said my situation was unique as I literally got the car back 36 hours earlier .
I said at the moment I’ve flushed 1200 down the pan as you’d of fitted it free on the Monday .
The dealer where I had mine done said on Friday that he'd talk to his boss over the weekend and see if there was anything they could do to appeal to Honda's better nature but I've not heard anything back today sadly.

Been following this thread in the background, I've a 68 plate Civic at 45k miles and am worried about what I've read here, so I've started wondering if it's worth getting mine replaced a year early to save myself the possible hassle of an unexpected failure? I've checked my VIN, only shows one fix for an fk6/fc9 possible misfire fault, would this model still be susceptible to the same faulty timing belt assembly? I suspect so as it's the same engine being rolled off the production line?
Is it the one litre? If so it might be that you have to hit the 6 year age before it becomes recallable... The irony is that mine has only just done 30K. I was on the motorway for 10 hours at the weekend, fuming every time I saw a Civic that was a bit younger than mine, glad they weren't going to get shafted like me but still angry!

Phoned Honda dealer this morning. I am being booked in for the repair free of charge before Christmas. They have told me they could have the car up to 2 days and at a minimum timing belt will be changed but other parts? Could need changing.
Happy for you. I've managed to get Which? interested in the story - hopefully they can shame Honda into doing the right thing...

There is a lot of bullsh1t flying. I checked by putting my VIN into the Honda UK website and although I've been ripped off by them, their website happily confirmed that my car had been recalled for missing teeth on the timing belt and a misfire and I should contact my dealer to have it fixed for free...

Just FYI: I had my 21 plate Civic 1.0l SR in for regular periodic service (visual health check) this week, and work item "6NE PRODUCT UPDATE - 1.0L FK6 & FC9 MISFIRE AND PISTON" was automatically added to the list and completed FOC (quoted as being a software update).

6NK (the first 2 items on the above list for timing belt?) was NOT added to the list for my car, so I presume that the belt issue only affected 1.0ltr Gen 10 cars prior to circa 2021 but was corrected by the time mine was produced?

I might ask them specifically just to confirm, next time I'm in.
You can type your VIN in here and see what's supposed to be done...

I’ve just had the local Honda manager on the phone saying Honda are playing hardball in regards to funds refunded regardless of when it was done .
mine done on the 4th of November .
I’ve just contacted honda customer service teams and got a case number I’ve submitted to my local honda because he said he’s pushing and each dealership is pushing for refunds of some sort anyway.
Yeah, I asked the service centre that did the work to appeal on my behalf but that was over a week ago and I've heard nothing. I'm resigned to being screwed by them now. It might help if others who have been affected by this got in touch with you&yours and moneybox on radio 4 and also which. I doubt any motoring mags would dare run the story for fear of loss of ad revenue or access to new models. If we can make someone realise this is quite a widespread problem, we could at least get Honda some bad publicity. They really have behaving appalingly over this.
