Some interesting further info that I gleaned from the service tech at our dealership yesterday.

I was informed that it was possibly the timing belt pulley that has been linked to the small (?) number of failures and this may have been altered in design slightly to ensure that this was not causing damage to the belt. Supposition on their part as they are kept in the dark regarding the bigger picture. They just get sent the updated kits/parts.

I was advised that now these parts have been replaced following the first change interval, future problems are unlikely due to the above. And without wishing to state the obvious, regular oil and filter changes are even more important with these wet belt designs.

This is another instance where Honda may have found a problem, fixed it, and sent new parts to dealers to be fitted during routine servicing.

Those owners who decide to ditch main dealers won't get this fix as third party garages don't get Honda service bulletins.

A full dealer service history is worth its weight in gold when things go wrong but I often get criticised for posting

Agree- this appears to be the most likely scenario. The dealer said they get sent a kit now for the change rather than individual parts. I wouldn't be looking to get an independent garage to change the timing belt taking into account issues have been cropping up with it. I suspect most would decline doing the work anyway.

Over the last year or so I've seen over a dozen posts on various Civic forums about the 1.0 wet belt having let go and wrecked the engine, valves into pistons.

Those with a full Honda service history have had the repairs FOC whereas those who've gone private have been told they will have to fund the repair.

Over the 16 years I've been active on Civic forums I've seen many similar instances of HFSH being the key to free repairs.

The only free fix I've ever seen being conducted regardless is the 8G Civic rusty roof, but only if reported within a sensible timeframe of it first appearing across the top of the windscreen

So what are you saying is that Honda wouldn't talk to you if you haven't serviced the car with an official Honda dealer? I've also got a 67 plate civic (6 years) with 49k mileage and a snapped timing belt. I've serviced the car at a local garage.

I don't know about not talking to you. You'll need to let us know.

All I've seen posted is that those with a full Honda service history have far more success in getting faults fixed, usually posted as a goodwill gesture.

I suppose Honda may say, in this instance, 'if we'd serviced it it would have been subject to the updated pulley kit so the belt wouldn't have snapped'

Thanks, I'd agree. Would you have any ideas whether there is any hope that the engine wasn't really damaged when the timing belt snapped? Is it worth paying the garage to check it? I've seen some youtube videos about this possibility, albeit for other honda models.

Without getting into a debate or falling out you probably get criticised because the dealer is not allowed under UK law to refuse warranty claims , when serviced 3rd party by a vat registered garage that uses OEM fluids and parts when servicing no matter if they like it or not and also any good garage has access to live TSB,s
I won't go on but it does rub me up the wrong way when people generally slate garages against dealers as dealers in my experience only do the bare minimum of servicing and don't go that extra mile a lot of garages goto
Of course there are exceptions in both directions.
👍

No problem at all with different viewpoints :)

The way I see it in this instance is ........

"You have claimed against the wet belt giving way and it's destroyed your engine".
"Had the car come to us for its last service we would have replaced some components to help prevent this happening".
"It did give way, in our opinion, due to lack of preventative maintenance so you will need to pay for repairs"

I hear you
But without looking back through threads you also have a person on here moaning about paying for a 5 year service plan with a dealer and the belt not even being changed which brings me back to there is good and bad in every side
I would say that just like ford etc they should own the problem and sort out the diabolical idea no matter what as it's a design problem not a service issue especially at the mileages failures are occurring at
👍

Been lurking this thread but I've just had the timing belt changed on my 2017 Civic. Was quoted £1200 but had the pleasure of the dealership telling me they had changed it free of charge!
I'm not 100% sure of the details but they mentioned getting a bulletin from Honda on November 6 about the timing belt change and they told me that if I'd had this done a couple of weeks ago, it would've cost me £1200. Not sure if getting the replacement will be free for everyone from now on but wanted to share my story.
FWIW, I've had the car 18 months and haven't used an official Honda dealership for MOTs or services.

Wow - thanks for the heads up. As I just paid the £1200 3 weeks ago for this prcoedure I'll be following this up with Honda and my dealer tomorrow. Hopefully they will do the right thing... Just out of interest, which dealer did this for you? Thanks Si
