Summa summarum: The cause to these timing belt failures is not wrong engine oil. If you use full syhtethic oil w0-30 then it cant go wrong (eg. Honda 0w20, Mobil 5w30 or Mobil 0w30 all are ok). Honda like also Ford (1.0 ecoboost wet belt failures!) are claiming that wrong oil would cause failures. That is not true. Most cars with wet belt problems have been serviced under Honda/ Ford. The reason of failures is the cranksaft pulley/ tensioner pulley and possibly also bad timing belt material. Models 2019 forwards pulleys and belt are better designed and better material and failures happen less than these 2017-18 models. Why Honda then called "in error" some 2019 cars to 6NK repair (=replacing timing belt and pulleys)? Was it because Honda didn´t exactly know when was the new pulley taken to assembly or was it just a mistake? Did Honda just want to know, whether the new pulley really was good and rip off is not happening any more? Did Honda later, when first 2019 models did the recall in November-December 2023, notice that new pulleys were already assemled to 2019 models and they seemed to work fine? Was this why the recall for 2019 models was cancelled and in january 2024 sent these by "error" letters. Honda should pay all the repairs of engine failures before 6 years/75000 miles service because the engines break before the service interval that Honda has stated.

Mine is a 67 plate 1.0 CVT Automatic with 60K miles and not covered by any recalls. The belt had already been replaced at ~35K in '21 by previous owner which should be using all the latest parts and materials. However, I had all the dashboard lights a month ago - the car continued to run fine. At the dealers the code came up as cam position sensor A B which they replaced but lights returned shortly after I drove it out from the dealers. Car continued to run fine but it went back in and this time I was told the belt had deteriorated and damaged turbo and other parts of the engine. So this belt is barely 3 years old with only 25,000 miles on it. Don't know full details of repair as it's still waiting on parts but indications are belt, tensioner, turbo and other engine components. I had a month to go of a 12month ext. warranty and they are covering the cost so I thank my lucky stars but they won't cover diagnostics which I am a bit disappointed with considering the well known issues. However I have had a courtesy car from the dealer for over a month now which is good and I have got quite attached to this little Jazz! They can keep the civic.

Finally got my car back and dealer surprised me by dropping the diagnostics charge. So over a month in the garage and full use of a courtesy car for the duration and no cost to me - that's a massive relief. Note that I bought this car from this dealer only 10 months ago and had the 12month warranty through that purchase so that may have had some bearing on how they've dealt with it. But it's nearly a 7 year old car with 60,000 and gone through 2 cambelts and possibly 2 engine rebuilds in that time so I consider myself v. lucky and I'm so glad I went with a main dealer purchase for the extended warranty. I don't know full details or cost of engine rebuild but they told me it's had a whole new top end, cam belt, tensioner & turbo. I don't intend to keep the car now though past the warranty expiry which is next month and I wouldn't run one of these without a dealer warranty - they are worth their weight in gold for this model/engine.

Hi, I had the same issue and cam shaft sensor A,B problem but they didnt change the sensor rather they Reset the codes and said its fine nothing to worry about, and also they said they updated the software. Then After 20days my engine failed on the motorway and still havent provided me with a courtesy car and no reply yet about what's happening.
Seems like its 1.0 turbo engine problem

Mine is shown on the recall site as needing the cambelt and the piston software update, but I've only had the letter for the software update. It's all a bit shambolic!
Exactly the same as me, one recall letter for software update, phoned Honda service, the centre manager told me it'd be a double recall, got into a back n forth with Honda UK about a hire car for 2 weeks which they said they would approve if the garage covered it but it was leaving the service centre out of pocket, car has a date to be took in June but on Thursday the Car failed while on the Motorway and lost all power and nearly caused a accident due to the politics by Honda UK in delaying a hire car replacement, car has a p0299 diagnostic fault with a smell on fuel in the vehicle which now 5 people have confirmed, the last being the recovery Driver taking it to the service centre, thanks Honda very much in messing me about for 5 months, car has only done 45000, 5 year service plan and approaching 6 year old in July, now will need a full new engine with a waiting tome of early next year as there is 6 cars ahead of me, you actually couldn't make it up 🤣

Just drove my 67 plate Honda civic into the dealership for service and was told £16000 (£16k) for a new engine as mine is unrepairable because of debris from degeneration of cam belt @ 40 thousand miles! Honda have said belt "was of sufficient quality and fit for purpose" so not interested in offering assistance / replacement. Total disgrace!!💩🏠. has anyone been successful in having replacements?
Hey brother
What did you do afterwards
Im on the same situation its been one month and have no idea what to do?

7 months on and the cambelt has been changed whilst in for an aircon service and MOT. I was going to bring it up when I picked up the car after the previous 2 recall appointments had to be cancelled, but they phoned to get recall done half way through the day. Didn’t seem to take them too long to do the job, maybe they’re well versed in it now.

I got the Civic back last week with a brand new engine paid for by Honda following the timing belt break. So I'm very impressed by their goodwill gesture but 2 days later the engine warning light has come on. After diagnosis at the Honda dealer. now the Catalytic converter is working below threshold and Honda will not pay for that because its part of exhaust system. Cost to me £2300 for a new cat. I just cant believe the prices of Honda parts!!! The car is 5 years old, surely the cat should last longer than that. The timing belt problem must surely be related and they have taken responsibility for that. The whole saga has been going on for more than a month. Expensive and frustrating!!!!
hi did you manage to get this refunded by the goodwill gesture? Could you also give all the details about which vehicle you have and how many miles it broke at. I have a 1.0 Automatic which frustratingly isn't covered in the Honda warranty. However, I'm doing everything I can to get my AC and the timing belt paid for by Honda. (Because it quite literally is their fault to fix)

Hi. I hope.my message finds you well. Your post has been very helpful. I am actually in a Very similar situation to you. I have 2018 1.0 civic that just would not start and the honda dealer garage that did the last 2 service said the engine has gone. It has done 52k on the clock and just had the service done by the same Honda dealer last week. They are quoting me £15,000 repair. I have not got any extended warranty on the car. The honda dealer garage has put in a claim to honda on my behalf but I have been informed this morning that the claim was rejected. I have contacted Honda for a goodwill repair and I am still expecting a reply from them. My greatest fear is if that is rejected too, what do I do. The car was bought from a Honda Dealer, the same dealer that I bought my last honda from and this is my 3rd honda civic in the last 13 years. This specific honda has only been serviced with Honda from new when I bought an approved used when it was just 3 years old. I am really struggling at the moment. I don't even know what leg I have to stand on.

I have the same problem. Was your car still under waranty or extended warranty?

Honda has come back with a unfortunate response that because I do not have extended warranty, they are not under obligation to contribute towards the repair of the vehicle. Very very upset right now and don't know what to do next

Mine just had replacement. But won't start this morning. Picked the car on Thursday, they had it in, for possibly, full new engine? I know sounds crazy that i am not sure. They told me its a new engine, but no paperwork was provided or any warranty was given when work was completed. So who knows what has been done! So frustrating but just didn't get anything out of them. Contacted main honda waiting for response what's happening.

I am in the exact same situation. why do we have to pay for a fault in their manufacturing... Is there anything we can doo? What have you done? they have given me a bill of 10k which is crazy.

Hello all, my timing belt snapped on Thursday Garage told me to check recalls before doing anything, turns out there is 2 one for Timing Belts and one for Pistons. Has anyone experienced this as not sure if Honda will still try to rip me off?
