Old Civic (mk8), new dreams

Hello all,

New to the forum and Civic ownership. Recently arrived back in the UK following some travel and I was looking at cars under £1k to get me started. I’d always wanted a Civic, the older style/look (I’m a previous Toyota Celica and Subaru Impreza WRX owner). To my delight I’ve acquired a 2009 2.2 diesel Civic. Slightly rough around the edges and with a few TLC moments required. I knew this though. Have to say, easily the most enjoyable of all my previous cars to drive. Ever. The scoobie was a 2l turbo, I loved it (a bit too loud though) and I don’t know if it’s recency bias or not (I honestly don’t think so) but this Civic wins.

I was warned (and ignored) being told that it was a “rust-magnet”. I couldn’t care less. I was on a budget and got a car I’ve always wanted.

Two things outwith my semi-decent level of dedication to DIY stick out where I could use some words of wisdom.

The ABS light is on (knew this before the sale). Before I take it anywhere, I believe this is the sensors as I took it a test drive and done emergency stop (in a safe place) at 20/30/35mph. The ABS is fine. Is this sensor a common problem? What can I expect to expect?

‘VSA! Check System’ is also on.
Is this normally hand-in-hand with faulty ABS sensors?

2nd separate issue is that the fuel flap is missing. Purchased a new fuel flap off eBay….which solves nothing other than aesthetic, if I were to glue it on and leave it as an ornament in my driveway.

The pull-lever underneath the steering wheel does absolutely nothing (feels like the cable isn’t even attached, but I don’t know this as a fact (picture of its current state on the outside is attached).

What are my options? Remove the inner-cap and fit one with a thumb indent where I can just pull it open when I have to refuel? Is changing the cable a huge job? Will a mechanic even touch that? Anyone with similar experiences, if so, what was the best workaround? I just want to put diesel in the car when required and fit the outer cap/flap to keep it looking decent (and stop rain ingress). Appreciate any comments on this post.
