Yo guys, my EJ9 1.4 is buggered hah, after the hammering that i give it, im not surprised!
Anyways... iv got a D15 engine waiting to go in... just the engine with the inlet and exhaust manifold, was just wondering, is there a chance that the engine will go in using my ECU (originally for 1.4) or will i have to change the ecu as well? but doing this, wont i have to change the key and the barrel? because isnt the immobilizer built into the ECU and if i change the ECU to the 1.5 ecu, and try and use my key, wont it immobilize itself?

I was told i can use my ECU aslong as i use my inlet manifold and all my sensors, then it should work fine? but it could possibly be slightly under fueling...

This will be my first engine swap, and im not familiar with doing them, and also not too familiar on how the ECU, Fueling and immobilizer etc actually works...
Any info will be GREAT!
Cheers! rob

simples my friend

definatly use a D15Z6 (i assume thats what you have) ecu as it will work the vtec properly... using a D14 ecu will one under fuel but more worringly may run the engine constantly on 3 valves which would be very bad for anything over 4000rpm.

you can change the immobiliser chip from OBD2 ecu's... ive done it and written a "how to" in the electronics section. My car has run with no problems after doing it. (ive done it on 3 ecu's, still no problems.)

Dont worry about what OBD the engine used to be as the difference between 2a and 2b is small so you can just swap sensors fron the D14 should you need too, just get the ECU for the OBD of the car.

feel free to PM me if you have trouble.

You can also get an OBD1 ecu and convo harness and then chip and map it... its a lot of faff and cost but will be able to tune it for more power

Hi, thanks for the reply guys!
Im hoping to get the engine in and running on the weekend hah, as i'll need it for work on monday...

My current engine is a D14A4, so not sure what OBD this is...
Im not sure (will find out when i pop up to my mates) what type of D15 it is... I wouldnt have thought it was the D15Z6 though...
For instance, if the engine is the non vtec D15, my ECU should run the engine fine, but would just be underfueling? But if it is the Vtec D15, it will still run ok, but once it hits 4000rpm, it wont change to vtec because my ECU doesnt support vtec? therefore, it will only run on 3 valves? :S
Im confuzzled haha! this is what happens when a landscaper decided to do an engine swap with a ford mechanic :p haha!

i'll find out what the engine code for D15 is tonight, then will find out which OBD ecu is needed... as im not sure if my mate still has the ecu from the D15, and may have to get one from scrappy...

All im hoping is that the D15 will run ok on my ECU for now, untill i get hold of the correct ECU for the D15, then have time to faff around with immobilizer chips etc lol

Id hope not, it will run of 12valve's and run lumpy, and have no vtec. Because the D15z6 is set in 12v mode till 3k then 16v vtec. in short.
If its that engine youll need the D15z6 ECU. then its a straight swap.

If its none vtec 1.5 then it will run lean on the 1.4 ecu.

Simple?

I get that crystal mate lol
I went and had a little look at the engine tonight... Its a D15B with single point injection, and mines a D14A4 with multi point injection, so if i was to run the D15 with my ECU it would run lean, but i'd also have to swap the inlet for mine, as my ECU doesnt support single point injection... But also, if i was to put the D15 ECU in, so it ran properly on single point, id have to change the loom, and also have to do the immobilizer swap like TonyCoupe97 has said...
Seams like quite alot of work + money to do in 1 day...

So we have came to the conclusion of doing a compression test on my D14 to see if its actually the rings that have gone, or if its just the Valve stem seals, like i thought it was in the first place...
Hmmm its abit of a tough one! To do the swap, or to keep the D14 untill i save up for a EK4 or even a 9 :p lol

Im pretty sure it was just a D15B :S lol! was pretty dark when i was looking, only had the light from a small torch on my lighter haha!
Deffo SPI though... its out of a EG6... god knows :D haha! iv only just recently started taking interest in what i drive! lol

Yeah man, im in carlisle... my mate owns the engine, he will sell it like... not too sure how much for, probably ÂŁ100...?

Anyways, back on topic...

Think im gonna give up with the swap, and sort my engine out...

Done a pressure test on my D14 tonight... looks like the rings are fine, all pistons are holding pressure...
number 3 spark plug though, was MEGA carboned up... so much that the little electrode was just a blob of carbon... lol so to me, it looks like piston 3's Valve Stem seal is fooked... either that, or a vavle is fooked in that cylinder... Either way, taking head off next saturday, gonna get a gasket set n replace all the gaskets and valve seals, then give it all a clean n see how it goes!

Cheers for the help though guys! can use this as future reference if i ever do the swap! :)
