Dear hondacivicforum,

As you may see, this is my first post on this forum and I hope I will get some help and manage to help others in the future as well.

As in the title, I have a 1996 Honda Civic Coupe with a 1.5L engine. I want to get a turbo for it (preferably used) and I wanted to find out a couple of things.

First of all, how much and how long does it take for a local mechanic to fit it + do local MOT + car garages fit turbos or do you need to go to a specialist mechanic?

Also, does it matter if the turbo is from e.g. a 2002 1.7 civic CTDI ? As I couldn't find any 1.5 or 1.7 petrol turbos on the internet. Are there any sites apart from ebay where you can find a used turbocharger?

Finally, what other things can you do to add some power to the car? Currently my honda has around 110-120 BHP and I'm looking to add parts which will give it at least another 20BHP rather than remapping it which would only give me 6bhp.

Thanks in advance.

installing a turbo is a long process. Its not just simple as installing a turbo, you have to install new manifold, oil return, i think new fuel pump and you have to remap the ECU, plus hows your clutch cos an oem clutch wont last very long and also hows the engine and gearbox itself?

I doubt a normal garage will even take on a job like that and whoever does will probably charge a fair bit. I seriously dont think it will be worth the money, time or effort. Unless you have spent a significant amount of money on the car already trying making it look good, i would suggest sell it and buy a b-series civic. Will be much faster from stock and if you decide to turbo you will have serious power.

And finally rather than trying to add bhp you should try and get the most of what you have. By this I mean swap the gearbox for a short-ratio one. Your going to have to google which one but if you do get the right one it will completely change the car. I swapped a JDM engine and gearbox into mine and I love it.

Wow did you say ctdi? Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't that a diesel turbo? That would not work if that's the case my knowledge on 1.7 ctdi isn't great but I'm sure your bitting off more than you can chew by trying to fit a diesel turbo to a petrol engine. Maybe think about the d16z6 engine there are some for sale on here. Turbo that properly e.g internals. Intercooler. Race feeds waste gate etc.
