MB4 1998 Civic 1.6 SOHC ESi Air Con Question

Postby ose1665 » 21 Dec 2009, 22:56

Hi new member hear, We have just replaced our 21 year old Honda Ballade for a sweet 55K Civic ESi FHSH (all the toys for the year) including Air Con. :D
My Question is, When we picked up the car the Air was working in that the blue light lit on the switch you could hear a slight reduction in the tick over as the Air kicked in and the fan on the Air con rad went on and off in a normal manner.
2 days later the blue light only illuminated after a while say 5 minutes and now it won't light at all, the air con fan is still running as before and if it wasn't so dam cold I could tell if it was cooling the car,
Is there anything I am missing? or could it just be that the blue light has broken in the switch if so is it easy to extract and replace/test.
The hand book totally ignors the blue light re-replacment.
Any help would be most welcome, thankyou.

Hi Ryan,
I am a bit confused (excuse the pun) the box by the battery says air con fan fuse 8 which is working so cannot be blown,
The hand book refers to another fuse box interior but didn't say where it was!
And it dose not refer to Air con in the interior boxes listing, there are fuses 3,4,5,29,30 listed as spare.
I am not sure about Fuse 25 which lists rear demister, heater motor relay, cooling fan relay.
Now as these are all the same fuse the other items listed i.e. the heater fan are also working.
I take it that there is a fan for the air con then? or am I wrong on this..
Should I suspect the cooling relay and is that the on the front of the car next to the headlight nearside as I can see what appears to be 2 relays just above the air con rad.

Hi mate. The interior fusebox is easy to find. If you look to the right of the steering wheel, on the lower half of the dash, you'll see a small compartment (for coins, sunglasses etc) You need to open it, then kind of wiggle upwards and outwards (it will free from the bottom first) to remove it. The fusebox is located in behind that compartment. Theres a fusebox guide on the back of the compartment you removed.
Check for fuses for aircon in there ( i cant rmember off hand if there are any for the aircon in that fusebox) and replace as neccessary.
Is the aircon, as far as you can tell, still coming on when you press the switch, regardless of the blue light being on or not? If it is working, then remove the switch (theres a small slot for a small flatblade screwdriver to go in) and you will see where the bulb goes into the switch. It should only take a half turn to release it. Probable that the bulb is faulty, or loose. Easy to fix.
Hope this helps

The air con works regardless of the blue light which seems to come on when it wants to, can anybody be more specific about the switch removal exactly where on the switch do you fit the flat blade screwdriver top, left, right, or bottom? and how do you extract it?
Thanks anyway At least I am a bit closer to solving my problem.
