Default ECU Immobiliser - car won't start HELP !

I am woman with a 2006 Honda Civic 2.2 CTDi (50,000 miles) which i bought new in 2006. I love my car but recently have encountered problems with trying to start the engine. The problem is intermittent and has had me stranded in all sorts of places! At one place when I was stranded, the RAC told me to get out of the car and switch my fob on and off a few times and then to immediately jump back in and start the car while in gear (foot on clutch) . This started the car but no longer does that tip work. So i finally went to a garage who spent 2 days looking at it and said there were 12 error codes and that i need a new ECU at a cost of 995 + fitting ! Needless to say I am horrified. I managed to start the car and drive it home and am now wondering what to do as some folk say that a new ECU may nto be the cause of the problem and to get an auto electrician to look at it or buy a secind hand hand (cheap) ECU. Any advice pls -I want to keep my car. I live in manchester. Thanks

    Hi,

Just seen your message. Is your car a diesel too? After emailing the CEO of Honda and being fobbed off by him (because I'd bought the car from a Franchised Dealership) and asking anyone who'd listen to me, I ended up reluctantly taking the car back to Honda for a second time after they were due to charge me 2k to look at it and 'maybe' fix it by pulling some bit out and after shedding a few tears, a really nice mechanic quietly pulled me to one side and told me to 'get rid of it' because it would cost a lot to fix and wasn't worth it as it might not even start and I'd still have to pay for the labour! I ended up finding out that I shouldn't have bought a diesel if I wasn't going to do some serious long distance mileage in it (motorway driving) and as I mainly used it for city driving, that may have been the cause. It's a shame the salesman didn't tell me that at Honda when I bought it, else I'd have got a petrol model.

I knew I couldn't take the risk of trying to flog it if it wouldn't start ! So I finally took my dad's advice and took it to my Dad's mate's garage ( who I'd resisted for a while claiming ' what do they know' ) and they literally took out the knackered ECU and installed a second hand ECU from another Honda. And yes it finally started but whilst the limp mode went away you could tell it wasn't the same car, not as smooth a drive and didn't pick up speed as it used to. So I got it spruced up and managed to sell it pretty quickly. 3 years on and I still find my self looking longingly at the other civics on the road, but I don't think I will go back to one again as I felt I got such a raw deal from them.
